Stewardship and management

The wind blows the grass amongst the nine simple crosses, archaeological remains mark where buildings stood, and a cairn marks the Frog Lake tragedy of April 2, 1885. A walk along the interpretive trail tells the story of hardship, confusion, hunger and a retaliation that would cost the community everything.

The herds of buffalo were depleted and living a life on a settlement was a harsh adjustment for the Plains Cree. Chief Big Bear tried to improve the conditions for his people but the passive approach was too slow for a breakaway group of warriors. They took it upon themselves to attack and burn the village leaving nine people dead.
