Location(s): Fort Langley National Historic Site

Join us for an incredible journey through the rich tapestry of Afro-diasporic history in "Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum," presented by the BC Black History Awareness Society in collaboration with the Royal BC Museum.

This groundbreaking exhibition brings to light the often overlooked and whitewashed stories of Black "British Columbians" throughout history. For the first time, witness the vibrant narrative of Black belonging, courageously told by the Black community themselves.

Written, narrated, and curated by Black voices, this exhibition boldly reclaims the complex history of resilience and resistance. Discover the extraordinary contributions of Black leaders whose legacies resonate through the ages, including the remarkable stories of trailblazing women like Sylvia Stark and her daughter Emma Stark.

Experience the power of Black voices through audio recordings from across the province, adding depth and authenticity to this vital narrative. Plus, immerse yourself in thought-provoking artwork by young Black artists, shedding light on the legacy of Vancouver's Hogan's Alley community.

Join us at the Fort Langley National Historic Site from May 3 to Jan 7, 2025, on this journey of reflection, empowerment, and hope.

  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation โ€“ A day to honor, understand, and heal

    Time: 10:00 AM - 05:00 PM
Location(s): Fort Langley National Historic Site
    Cost: Free

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

Join us at Fort Langley National Historic Site, on Saturday, September 28, for a special event dedicated to this important day. Attend a presentation by Len Pierre, from the Len Pierre Consulting, an Indigenous Leadership, Innovation, & Transformation Consulting Group; visit the Métis Nation BC exhibit in the Big House; watch Indigenous videos in the theatre; and make an Orange Shirt Day button.

Orange Shirt Day, also observed on September 30, is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools. However you choose to participate and commemorate, let us all take the time to listen and learn, to begin or deepen our understanding of the truths that we must acknowledge before full reconciliation can occur.

    Programs:

    • ๐Ÿ•’ 10:30 a.m. | Presentation by Len Pierre of Len Pierre Consulting
