Community Update: Projects out to Tender

Kingston Mills Lock and Swing Bridge

July 25, 2018 – This week and last, construction projects planned for the Kingston Mills and Jones Falls lockstations were put out to tender. Tenders will close in early September, after which bidders will be selected and further information on the project schedules can be shared. These projects are currently planned to begin in fall 2018.

Kingston Mills Locks 46-49 Rehabilitation

Beginning this fall, the Kingston Mills locks will undergo major historic masonry rehabilitation. Work will include stone replacement and repair, as well as repointing and grouting. Kingston Mills lock rehabilitation is planned for substantial completion in spring 2021.

Jones Falls Lock 39-42 Rehabilitation

Similarly, the four locks at Jones Falls will also undergo historic masonry repairs beginning in the fall. Work will include stone replacement, repointing, and grouting. This repair is the largest capital project being undertaken on the Rideau Canal since its original construction. The full rehabilitation is expected to be completed over a three year period, with substantial completion scheduled for spring 2021.

Jones Falls Timber Bridge Replacement

Jones Falls Timber Bridge will be undergoing a replacement beginning in fall 2018. The new bridge will be built to match the existing structure and replicate the original bridge elevation. The bridge’s concrete abutments and wing walls will be replaced with reinforced concrete to better support the structure, and a timber deck will also be installed. This project is expected to be
completed in spring 2019.

These projects are part of Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion dollar investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These investments represent the largest federal infrastructure plan in the history of Parks Canada.
