The Sault Canal – Management plan public meeting

Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

by Jeanette Cowen

What exactly is involved in managing a Parks Canada National Historic Site? How and why do we make specific decisions? The answers may be found in the site’s management plan. Learn more about the Sault Ste. Marie Canal’s new management plan at a public session in May!

Parks Canada protected areas have to complete management plans every ten years. The process is a long one, and was described in a shoreLINES story last winter. Preliminary work began on the new plan in 2017 and we expect to complete it by the fall of the 2018.

The public consultation phase for the Sault Ste. Marie Canal management plan begins this spring, with two public sessions on June 12, 2018 to present the draft plan. Please join us at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal’s Store’s Building from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., presentations begin at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. To keep up to date on the most recent information about the planning progress, including access to the draft plan and to learn how you can be involved, please consult the Sault Canal’s management planning page. We look forward to hearing your ideas for the future of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site!
