Community Update: Site Preparation
Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site
March 14, 2019 – Next week, the contractor will be onsite preparing the staging area for upcoming construction scheduled to begin on Glen Miller Dam this summer. In order to create the staging area, tree removal will take place on both the east and west side of the dam. Traffic in the area will not be affected.
As with all Parks Canada infrastructure projects, Glen Miller Dam 3 plans have undergone environmental assessments to ensure appropriate ecological protection measures are in place. This project includes the study of potential impacts to Species at Risk. Tree removals are being done outside of the bird nesting season in order to protect migratory birds and wildlife. The Glen Miller Dam 3 project also includes the implementation of a re-vegetation plan once construction is complete.
Construction to begin summer 2019
Construction on Glen Miller Dam 3 is projected to mobilize by July 2019 and complete in fall 2021. Work will be completed in two phases starting on the east side of the dam. Work involves full replacement of the dam immediately below the existing one and rehabilitation of the earth embankment adjacent to lock 3. The new dam will have improvements such as a wider deck that can carry the load of large trucks, additional gains to dewater specific sections of the dam for maintenance, and increased water capacity.
Lock 3, located just south of Glen Miller Dam will undergo embankment and shoreline reconstruction along a small portion of the east side of the river in order to preserve the shoreline.
The Government of Canada has announced more than $615 million of work on infrastructure across the Trent-Severn Waterway and its reservoir lakes. As a part of this historic re-investment, major work is being done throughout the Quinte West community.
