Healey Falls Locks Valve Tunnel Rehabilitation

January 31, 2023 – CAMPBELLFORD, ON – Over the last seven years, Parks Canada has undertaken a large infrastructure renewal program on the locks, bridges and dams of the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site. Recently, funding has been allocated to install new valves and undertake substantial concrete rehabilitation on the valve shafts and tunnels at Locks 16/17 - Healey Falls. These upgrades, including the replacement of components that have been in operation for over a century, will ensure continued reliability for navigation operations at this lock site for many years to come.

Work will begin in early February. Boat navigation will not be impacted during construction, which is expected to be completed in spring 2023. Only minimal, sporadic delays are anticipated for vehicular traffic in the area. Community members are reminded that this area is considered an active construction site seven days a week and will remain so until May 2023, subject to further notice. Until the work is complete, the public is asked to obey all signage and exercise caution near the site due to ongoing construction safety risks.

This work is part of the Government of Canada’s unprecedented investment to support infrastructure work for heritage, visitor, waterway, and highway assets located within Parks Canada administered national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These historic investments will mitigate health and safety risks, reduce the loss of nationally significant built heritage, and stimulate the economy in communities across the country.
