1847, Grosse Île: a record of daily events

by André Charbonneau and André Sévigny

The day-to-day account of the sad events that took place in 1847 on Grosse Île.

Written as a chronicle, this book makes accessible to the general public the day-to-day account of the sad events that took place in 1847 on Grosse Île. This island in the St. Lawrence River was the quarantine station for the Port of Québec which saw more than 90 000 emigrants, mostly Irish, arrive during that tragic summer. More than 5 000 were buried on Grosse Île in 1847. This record of daily events gives a detailed description of the administrative measures taken by the authorities to deal with the influx of such a large number of emigrants in deplorable conditions of disease and misery. It records the arrivals and departures of ships and gives weekly accounts of the sick and the dead.

Priests, doctors, sailors, and the emigrants themselves are called upon to give first-hand accounts of what happened in 1847. Extracts from newspapers recall the perception of events from the point of view of some representatives of the local community.
