To Winter There, by Charles Frédérick Ouellet
Presented as part of the Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie, the exhibition To winter there, by photographer Charles-Frédérick Ouellet, brings together a number of photographs retracing the career of French explorer Louis Jolliet, a figure of historic significance in North America.
An annual summertime event, Rencontres introduces the public to contemporary photographic creation and its topicality through occupation of a particular territory: the Gaspé Peninsula. There it presents a series of exhibitions and installations, public events conceived as a space for reflection and initiation, and a program of artist residencies and of exchanges with festivals in other countries.

To winter there
To winter there is a visual narrative inspired by the expeditions of Louis Jolliet (1645-1700) across the North American continent, a territory he traveled over for much of his life, until eventually he disappeared at sea. Nearly three hundred years later, in the absence of his lost journals, Charles-Frédérick Ouellet set off in the footsteps of this forgotten character, along inland-flowing. rivers. His photographs reveal two regions located in opposite directions: one in the southern United States, towards the mouth of the Mississippi, the other in northern Québec, where the Labrador Sea is an imposing presence.
