Group visits

Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site

Follow the guide to a historic confrontation

Accompanied by an employee in period costume, school-age groups, organised trips and visitors will be told the story of the Battle of the Restigouche as they tour the site. They will discover the journey and fate of the five merchant ships and their escort, the frigate Le Machault, sent by France in a last-ditch effort to support its colony after the surrender of Quebec in 1759.

As well as the remains of the Machault, an imposing 26-gun sailing ship, they will see a host of artefacts, many of which were collected during underwater archaeological digs in the Restigouche River. It's an original and educational way to relive the very last naval conflict between France and Great Britain for possession of North American territory.
