PURSUANT TO SECTION 7(1) OF THE GENERAL REGULATIONS OF THE CANADA NATIONAL PARKS ACT, THE USE OF THROTTLE/ACCELERATOR CONTROLLED POWER BICYLES ON TRAILS WITHIN WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK IS PROHIBITED BY ORDER OF THE SUPERINTENDENT.

PEDAL-ASSISTED POWER BICYLES ARE PERMITTED ON TRAILS, IF THEY:
1. Have steering handlebars and are equipped with pedals,

2. Are designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground,

3. Are capable of being propelled by muscular power,

4. Have one or more electric motors which have, singly or in combination, the following characteristics:
     a. A total continuous power output rating, measured at the shaft of each motor, of 500 W or less,
     b. power assistance immediately ceases when the muscular power ceases,
     c. are incapable of providing further assistance when the bicycle attains a speed of 32 km/h on level ground, and
     d. if it is engaged by the use of an accelerator controller, power assistance immediately ceases when the brakes are applied

5. Are equipped with one of the following safety mechanisms:
     a. an enabling mechanism to turn the electric motor on and off that is separate from the accelerator controller and fitted in such a manner that it is operable by the driver, or
     b. a mechanism that prevents the motor from being engaged before the bicycle attains a speed of 3 km/h.

6. Bears a label that is permanently affixed by the manufacturer, and appears in a conspicuous location stating, that the vehicle is a power-assisted bicycle as per Transport Canada Sections 2(1) of the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations. Otherwise the owner must provide proof of compliance to this regulation, and

7. Are only used on trails in Waterton Lakes National Park where bicycling is permitted (listed below, see attached map):
- Akamina Pass
- Crandell Mountain Trails (Crandell Lake Trails, Crandell to Townsite Trail)
- Kootenai Brown Trail
- Snowshoe Trail (from Red Rock Canyon to Snowshoe Patrol Cabin)
- Wishbone Trail, from the Chief Mountain Highway to Vimy Trail Junction.
