Riding Mountain National Park hereby gives notice that a submission has been added to the Navigable Waters Registry pursuant to the Canadian Navigable Waters Act for public comment described herein and its site and plans.

Pursuant to paragraph 10(1)(b) of the said Act, Riding Mountain National Park has deposited with the Minister of Transport, on the on-line Common Project Search Registry http://cps.canada.ca/ and under registry number 11271 a description of the following work, its site and plans:

The original Clear Lake main pier was constructed in 1934 using local materials, rocks from the lake and timbers from a mill within the park. The structure consists of timber piles which support laminated timber decking and timber curbs with an asphalt overlay. The breakwater is located on the western side of the structure and consists of earth fill overlayed with large rip rap/boulders. The northernmost part of the pier has a viewing platform with similar structural components. The pier also has timber cribbing below the structure which consists of horizontal logs, piles, and vertically oriented planks to retain fill material. The Clear Lake pier has since experienced serious erosion along most of the western side. To repair this damage and protect against wave action-induced erosion, large rip rap will be placed along the west and north side of the existing pier at a slope of 4:1. The rip rap will be cleaned prior to placement to prevent additional sediments from entering the water. The grade of the pier will also be increased by 8 inches. The second component of this project includes using divers to repair broken timber piles and caps and repair the west wall where required.

The objective of this project is to increase the structural integrity of the pier to ensure it’s safety for visitors’ use and to protect the asset as it is a class 2 cultural resource for Riding Mountain National Park.

The works will occur at the pier, located at Main Beach along Wasagaming Drive in the community of Wasagaming, Riding Mountain National Park. Note: The works described above will be occurring during the fall/winter of 2024-2025 and all navigation on Clear Lake is currently banned by order of the Superintendent.
