Info-work - Main Beach Pier and Lakeshore Trail improvements

Issued: October 09, 2024

Construction work to repair and upgrade the Lakeshore Trail and the Pier at the Main Beach in Riding Mountain National Park will begin this October and continue into spring 2025. These investments will repair damage caused by severe weather events in the spring and summer of 2022. The Pier and the Lakeshore Trail will be temporarily closed until spring. During this short closure, two iconic visitor facilities will be improved, making them safer, more reliable, and more accessible for a wide variety of park guests.

Improvements to the Pier include:

  • Strengthened structure protection with enhanced riprap (rocks and boulders).
  • Repairs to the walkway.
  • Widening of the vegetated grassy area.

Improvements to the Lakeshore Trail include:

  • Strengthened structure protection with enhanced riprap (rocks and boulders).
  • New access ramps will allow users to access both ends of the trail without having to navigate stairs.
  • Ten new stronger docks positioned to withstand waves and winds.
  • Enhanced rest areas along the trail so visitors can relax and take a break.
  • A harder, more even trail surface that drains better and is accessible to people of all abilities.

Parks Canada thanks visitors and community members for their patience during construction and looks forward to celebrating the completion of both projects next summer.
