Preserving the Dark Sky

Gros Morne National Park is now in the process of applying to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for designation as a Dark Sky Preserve.  There are several purposes of Dark-Sky Preserves: protect the darkness of the night sky for the flora and fauna dependent on it, to promote a love for and knowledge of astronomy and to reduce light pollution.

With these goals in mind, Dark-Sky Preserves adhere to strict protocols and standards set by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.  Working together with communities in Gros Morne National Park and the nearby Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, Gros Morne National Park hopes to help Canadians discover the wonders of the night sky through star-gazing events and educational tools.
