Archaeology

Archeology work was initiated on Sable Island National Park Reserve during the summer of 2015. The survey was designed to collect archaeological data and identify other cultural resources on the Island. Much of the survey work was completed over the past two years using aerial photographs, historical reports and documents, and information contained in many of the natural science studies undertaken in the past half century. This data was used to determine the location of potential living and work areas which were then surveyed in the field.

During public consultations, Nova Scotians expressed their public interest in the protection of Sable Island’s cultural resources. Parks Canada's ongoing archaeological work on Sable Island is part of that process, identifying resources and understanding how to best protect their survival. Parks Canada protects and presents these treasures because they tell stories of who we are.
