Monitoring bird populations

Nááts'įhch'oh National Park Reserve

Parks Canada uses a network of autonomous recording units (ARUs) throughout Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve to monitor birds based on the calls and sounds they make. Compared to traditional techniques like point-counts, ARUs are a cost-effective and efficient option for long-term bird monitoring in remote areas. Parks Canada staff program these devices to record during the spring and summer months over the hours when birds are most active. The recordings indicate which species are present and when, helping to understand changes and trends among bird populations in the park over time.

Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve collaborates with neighbouring Nahanni National Park Reserve as well as other agencies, like the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS), to share information and strengthen bird-monitoring efforts in the region.
