Ends: September 30, 2024

Starting September 26, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will conduct invasive species management of Phragmites near the Beare Road wetland.

As a result, the southern section of Beare Wetlands Loop will be closed between Thursday, September 26 and Sunday, September 29.  Visitors may still access Cedar Trail from the north end of the Beare Wetlands Loop.

Visitors are asked to respect all closures, signage and the direction of work crews in the vicinity. Please consider visiting other areas of the park while work is being carried out.

Phragmites australis is an invasive species of plant that poses a substantial threat to native plants and wildlife, including endangered monarch butterflies. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will apply herbicide as an action to control and manage their spread.

Application is conducted in accordance with Health Canada guidelines and by trained and licensed Toronto and Region Conservation staff. Signage is posted during herbicide use in restoration sites and for 48 hours afterward.

Planned invasive species management is integral to restoring healthy ecosystems in Rouge National Urban Park and increasing habitat for species at risk and other wildlife. The effectiveness of management actions is monitored seasonally to determine future actions.

By managing invasive species, Parks Canada is working to improve ecosystems and achieve restoration goals in Rouge National Urban Park.
