Community Update: Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

December 17, 2019 – The Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge is an important part of the landscape of the community, enabling the mix of both boat and vehicular traffic in the downtown core. Work on the swing bridge will include a rehabilitation of the steel superstructure; replacement of the steel deck with a new wood deck; rehabilitation of the concrete abutments, pivot pier, and approach slabs; and removal and installation of new mechanical/electrical operating system.

In order to complete this replacement, Main Street will be closed at the swing bridge for the duration of the project. During the non-navigation season, a temporary accessible bridge for pedestrians and mobility scooters will be installed and maintained.

Originally scheduled to begin fall 2019, this project has experienced some unforeseen delays in the design phase. Now that the design has been completed, the project is currently posted for tender on www.buyandsell.gc.ca and is scheduled to close mid December 2019. The contract should be awarded shortly thereafter.

While the exact timing of work has yet to be determined. , upon consideration of the unexpected delays and the impacts to the timeline they represent, Parks Canada has chosen to postpone the bridge closure until Fall 2020 to minimize the impact on the community’s peak tourism season.
