Protection of farmland

Rouge National Urban Park

What makes Rouge National Urban Park unique is its commitment to preserving not only natural landscapes and cultural legacies but also supporting local agriculture. Southern Ontario, home to some of Canada’s most fertile farmland, has faced urbanization replacing many farms around the Greater Toronto Area with subdivisions.

In the Rouge, significant portions of Class 1 farmland, known for its rarity and fertility, are protected, including the last remaining farms in the City of Toronto. The close proximity of farmland to the city ensures a local source of fresh, seasonal produce, supporting the local economy and promoting environmental sustainability.
