Community Update: Hamlet Bridges- Closure expected in early October

August 10, 2018 - As a part of an historic investment program along the Trent-Severn Waterway, and with support from Public Services and Procurement Canada, the construction tender for the replacement of the Hamlet Bridges has been released today as part of a competitive procurement process.

Parks Canada would like to clarify public information regarding the bridge’s closure: while closure was originally estimated for mid-August, the tender for construction has today been released and that process is scheduled to conclude on September 20, 2018. If successful bids are received, a bridge closure could be expected in early October.

While this will allow continued summer travel across the bridge this summer, there is the possibility that work will be extended into the summer of 2019. A more accurate schedule will not be known until a construction contract has been awarded.

Parks Canada will make every effort to keep the closure to a minimum and reduce public impact. For example, the tender includes a clause for a Value Added Proposal, which provides the successful contractor a financial incentive to propose efficiencies that could reduce the length of the road closure. As well, the new bridge will be constructed off-site allowing other work to be completed on-site concurrently.

Parks Canada will be communicating primarily via e-mail about this project and its schedule. To receive further information, we strongly encourage you to contact us at Ont.TrentSevern@pc.gc.ca and include “Hamlet” in the subject heading to be added to our communication list.

About the Hamlet Bridges

The Hamlet Bridge is located at the intersection of Canning Road and Peninsula Point Road between the townships of Severn and Gravenhurst, and is actually two bridges that are connected. Extensive inspections and repairs over the last number of years have led to the decision to fully replace both the fixed and swing portions of the bridge. The bridges will be replaced with those of a similar look, to preserve the historic landscape of the area. The new bridges will have an upgraded capacity for service and emergency vehicles.
