Community Update: Construction Update

May 30, 2019 – Onsite construction to replace the fixed and swing portions of the Hamlet Bridge has re-commenced this week. The Hamlet Bridge is located at the intersection of Canning Road and Peninsula Point Road, and connects the townships of Severn and Gravenhurst.

While construction at the Hamlet Bridge site was recently suspended to allow for spring fish spawning timelines, as well as high water flows during the spring melt, work on the new steel bridge has been ongoing at an offsite location. It is anticipated that the new bridge will be installed and open to vehicles in fall 2019, with intermittent closures in spring 2020 for commissioning and testing operation in warmer temperatures.

The navigation channel through this area is now open. Boaters are encouraged to exercise caution when boating through this area: please obey construction and speed signage, and reduce wakes.

About the Hamlet Bridge Construction

Extensive inspections and repairs over the last number of years have led to the decision to fully replace both the fixed and swing portions of the Hamlet Bridge, as well as the east and west bridge abutments, and the east pier. The mechanical and electrical systems of the bridge will be upgraded and the bridge will be raised to reduce the risk of immersion of mechanical components during high water events. The Hamlet Bridge is being replaced with that of a similar look, to preserve the historic landscape of the area. This work is a part of over $615 million being invested in Trent-Severn Waterway infrastructure.
