Info-Work: Boundary Road Swing Bridge – Project Update

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

August 02, 2022 – PETERBOROUGH, ON – Parks Canada advises that hiring a new contractor to complete the Boundary Road Swing Bridge replacement project is moving forward.

This includes a competitive procurement process to select an experienced construction contractor to carry out the remainder of the bridge replacement work that commenced in October 2020. Parks Canada had previously communicated that the initial contractor was removed from the project in the fall of 2021 after they failed to finish the bridge within the required timeframe.

The current procurement process is expected to be completed in September 2022. Our goal is to have a new contractor on site following the Thanksgiving weekend to coincide with the closure of the 2022 navigation season. Parks Canada’s new target date for reopening the bridge and connecting roadway is Spring 2023. However, it has been our experience with recent swing bridge replacement projects that schedule delays may occur for a variety of reasons including supply chain disruptions and labour market shortages. Should such circumstances result in changes to the project schedule, we will notify the public at the earliest opportunity.

The public is reminded that the Simcoe Street/Mara Eldon roadway remains closed. Roadway detour signage has recently been reinstated, and motorists are advised to follow detours until the bridge and connecting roadway are reopened.

Parks Canada is leading this important infrastructure work to ensure safe, high-quality experiences for visitors by improving heritage, visitor, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas, including along the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site. We appreciate your patience while we undertake these important investments into the infrastructure in Peterborough.
