Rideau Canal National Historic Site

The Kilmarnock lockstation is recognizable for its unequal arm, centre bearing timber swing bridge. The bridge is located directly over the lock and this site has the lowest lift of any lock on the Rideau Canal, at just 2 feet. Despite being somewhat remote, it is a popular stop for overnight guests. This site contains a limited number of power spots on the downstream side.

History

For most of the 19th century, Kilmarnock was known as Maitland's Lock, after James Maitland, a retired soldier, on whose property the lockstation was built. Maitland was appointed the first lockmaster of the station.
