FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: OCTOBER 6 TO 12, 2024

The week of October 6th to the 12th has been declared as Fire Prevention Week across Canada with the theme Smoke Alarms: Make Them WORK for You!

To provide adequate protection for the employees and visitors that Parks Canada welcomes into its buildings, whether for an overnight stay or a longer stay, the importance of having compliant smoke alarms in the required locations is of utmost importance.

Hear a Beep, Get on your Feet !

To mark Fire Prevention Week, Parks Canada would like to share some smoke alarms tips with you so that employees and visitors to our buildings can sleep soundly.

INSTALLATION
  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, between the sleeping area and the rest of the floor (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the house.
  • Install the smoke alarm on the ceiling or high on a wall at between 100 mm and 300 mm from the ceiling.  When installing, follow the instructions that come with the smoke alarm.
  • For a better protection, interconnect all smoke alarms. When one sounds, they all sound.
TESTING, MAINTENANCE AND REPLACEMENT
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning to keep smoke alarms working.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
SOUNDS OF SMOKES ALARMS
  • A continued set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single “chirp” every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the smoke alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
