Dear colleagues,

November 7 marks International Inuit Day, a day to celebrate the diverse histories, cultures, strengths and contributions of Inuit across Inuit Nunangat and beyond. On this day, we honour the deep connection to the land, water, and ice that Inuit have maintained since time immemorial. Inuit communities have stewarded these environments for generations, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit—the traditional knowledge and values passed down through generations— plays a vital role in guiding how we collaboratively care for and protect these special places today.

At Parks Canada, we are committed to working in partnership with Inuit, guided by the values of Ikajuqtigiinniq (working together for a common purpose) and Inuuqatigiitsiarniq (respecting others, relationships and caring for people). The Indigenous Stewardship Policy strengthens our commitment to fostering cultural continuity and collaboration, ensuring that voices from Inuit communities shape our stewardship practices. We honour Inuit ways and respect the wisdom that informs sustainable management of the areas we jointly safeguard.

This year, the Nunavut Field Unit HR team was the recipient of a PCEO Award of Excellence for their work to enhance Inuit employment, leadership, and wellness, through leading the development and implementation of Parks Canada’s Inuit Employment Plan. In close collaboration with staff and cooperative management boards, the Team eliminated barriers to Inuit employment, identified actions to support recruitment and retention of Inuit, created new culturally relevant programs and practices, and achieved Inuit employment targets.

I would like to invite all Parks Canada team members to learn more about Inuit culture through internal stories and resources on ParksNet, such as the Inuit Guardians, the Inuvialuit Final Agreement overview, and Inuit Guiding Principles as a Foundation for a Research Workshop.

There are also excellent resources such as the CSPS course Inuit in Canada (IR105) and videos such as the series Inuit Nunangat Taimannganit, and the film Our Land, Our Truth, to help further our collective understanding.

As we reflect today, may our actions and commitment to ongoing relationships, mutual respect, and openness to learning continue to guide us toward a future where Inuit knowledge and leadership flourish, rights are upheld, and traditions are celebrated.
