Real Property and Assets Funding from Budget 2024

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to share some positive news regarding our funding situation for real property and assets. As you may recall, Budget 2024 announced $545.1 million over four years in new funding to support real property and assets under the administration of Parks Canada. On November 21, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat approved Parks Canada’s plan to utilize this funding.

Planned investments to be supported by this funding will focus on assets that are essential for our mandate and for protecting public and team member safety. These include investing to protect heritage canals (e.g., dam replacement work at Esson Lake on the Trent-Severn Waterway) to ensure that highways and roadways remain safe and open (e.g., Highway 93S upgrades in Kootenay National Park) to prevent the loss of iconic built heritage (e.g., structural restoration work at the fortifications of Quebec), and to ensure the continuity of visitor services (e.g., stabilization of the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre).

I am particularly pleased to share that this funding will also support an important investment of approximately $30 million to improve existing staff housing and $40 million to upgrade maintenance compounds, garages and workshops to help ensure that our team members have access to safe, comfortable places to work and live. Our team members —all of you— are what make it possible to deliver our mandate on behalf of Canadians, and it is important to me that we invest in assets that support you, your ability to do your job, and your well-being. Further details of the specific housing and workplace assets to be addressed will be confirmed shortly and shared via Field Unit Superintendents.

I would like to recognize everyone at Parks Canada who contributed to the development of the Treasury Board submission. We can all be proud of this collective achievement, which represents a significant milestone for Parks Canada.
